Topic: [BUR] Changing masks

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Part 2 (how do I attach a BUR to an existing forum?)

alias eyemask -> eye_mask
Imply sleep_mask -> blindfold # duplicate of implication #22786
Imply domino_mask -> eye_mask
Imply eye_mask -> eyewear

Edit: I’ve gone researching and the thing I’m thinking of is called a domino_mask which we already have as a tag. No, what you are thinking of is a carnival mask.

In the url copy the number after /forum_topics/ and paste that into the "forum topic" field when creating a BUR

The bulk update request #11115 has been rejected.

change category eyemask (1632) -> invalid
change category eye_mask (458) -> invalid
remove implication sleep_mask (255) -> eyemask (1632)

Reason: A sleep mask is a blindfold, you can’t see out of it. It is not an eye mask.
Apart from that this is conversion

Sleep_mask and domino_mask are both distinct accessories that can be grouped together as types of mask worn over the eye area. Hence, the implication of these two to eyemask (or once fixed, eye_mask).

Also, eye_mask currently contain more than just domino_mask so aliasing it will create a difficult task of separating non-domino mask accessories.

So we are saying that an eye mask is any mask the aims specifically to cover over the area of or around the eyes?

Then implicate masquerade_mask -> eye_mask

Changed to neutral vote after reading the domino mask wikipedia article - this actually fits the description of most that are currently tagged under eyemask and eye_mask.

Although I am still not sure about aliasing these to domino_mask. The splatoon examples look more appropriate as mask_(marking) and a few tagged are sleep_mask.

Thinking of 2 possible options:
(1) after cleanup, proceed with alias request eyemask/eye_mask -> domino_mask, or
(2) similarly, after cleanup, mass update eyemask/eye_mask -> domino_mask then set eyemask/eye_mask to invalid tag since it's a pretty ambiguous tag

Sleep_mask already implicates blindfold so it's easy to clean that up, bringing up a mere 3 pages.
Splatoon can be filtered via the search ~eyemask ~eye_mask ~domino_mask splatoon which brings up only 8 pages.

So after cleanup... I personally would prefer the latter option. It's more visible and better at preventing future mistagging in this instance.
I'll modify my part 2 now to reflect that.

And what of masquerade_mask? It is usually portrayed as a fancy kind of domino_mask.

So we are saying that an eye mask is any mask the aims specifically to cover over the area of or around the eyes?

Then implicate masquerade_mask -> eye_mask

I will state that I will die on the hill that a masquerade mask is a type of domino mask and so should implicate domino mask.

Ehh gonna pass on that one. Domino mask appears to be specific to the plain variant worn by superheroes either with the straps or the pince-nez(?)/strapless versions. This is very much distinct from the complex designed and/or decorated versions which define the masquerade_mask tag

Very well then... thoughts on changing masquerade_mask to carnival_mask?

Revisiting this BUR project, here are the related AIBURs so far as of 2025-09-24:

I forgot what was the last thing being worked on here, I think it was cleaning up eyemask and eye_mask of mask_(markings) and sleep_mask, specifically ~eyemask ~eye_mask ~domino_mask splatoon

Bumping this again because I'm back and it's a new year!

Summary:

We have 2 tags, eye_mask and eyemask that are simultaniously the same thing and ambiguous.
Me and Zabaione want to change both to domino_mask since the most common proper usage for both tags is domino_mask.

We need to remove the implications attached to both tags to alias both to domino_mask, however we also need to remove eyemask and eye_mask from images that use it for sleep_mask, either before or after depending on what kind of mess we want to deal with.

We also need to clean the images in eyemask and eye_mask that happen to be mask_(marking), most of which are splatoon images. Thus the tag project ~eyemask ~eye_mask ~domino_mask splatoon since all inklings have a mask marking. Octolings btw have dark circles that don't meet and thus no mask except in their octo form.
Speaking of this last part makes me wonder if we could just request a Bulk Update change or remove all the currently troublesome tags from that tag group. I don't think we can. back to manually doing it.

What I really need to actually get this done is for the first part, removing the implications, to be approved so that if I encounter any sleep masks while cleaning for preping for the second part.

Updated

The bulk update request #12995 is pending approval.

create alias eye_mask (458) -> eyemask_(disambiguation) (0)
create alias eyemask (1632) -> eyemask_(disambiguation) (0) # has blocking transitive relationships, cannot be applied through BUR
change category eyemask_(disambiguation) (0) -> invalid

Reason: Part 3

I didn't realize what I was doing when I did it but this whole thing also needs a part 3 to invalidate eye_mask and eyemask.
Could just combine the two and make one invalid and that reduces the amount of tags to cause confusion.
Since this is a BUR, I could also do it the other way around or go back to the old method or having both become part of the invalid category.

The first part never getting through so I can take eyemask off of sleep_mask posts is getting to me. It's been a year since I started this and really need things to happen.

Done cleanup of the query ~eyemask ~eye_mask ~domino_mask splatoon. There is one post that is tagged with sleep_mask which implies eyemask.

Currently blocked on this as sleep_mask is currently implying eyemask. Which means bur:11114 unimplication of sleep_mask -> eyemask should be done first before we can continue to clean up the sleep_mask tags away from eyemask.

Then after the sleep_mask cleanup:

  • we can proceed with the next step which appears to be bur:11141 mass updating eyemask and eye_mask to domino_mask, then
  • bur:12995 changing tag eyemask category to invalid + disambiguation as suggested by @fluffysoup
