Topic: Add suggestion to trial new tags as a set to tagging guidelines

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Recently we've had a spate of new tags that are awkwardly named, redundant with another tag, or don't adequately justify their existence. Seemingly every time, veteran users tell the tags' creators they should have trialed the new tag as a set, but the tag creator says they didn't know that was an option. Their ignorance is understandable, given this supposedly common knowledge is not mentioned in e621:Tagging Checklist or any other help pages I could find. (The Tagging Checklist does mention the existence of sets, but only recommends using them for subjective concepts, not new tags.)

I'd like to suggest this advice be added somewhere new users are likely to see it. It could be added to the Tagging Checklist, or maybe even the upload form. While it's true that most new users will likely gloss over it anyway, it would curb this problem at least a little.

(A link to the "Do we have a tag for that?" thread would be a good addition, too.)

This isn't really important enough to add to the already overcrowded upload page, it should be kept to the wikis directly relevant to tags

Probably true. Could a link to "Do we have a tag for that?" be squeezed in, though?

To be fair, the Uploads page has two variants which can be toggled in the Settings page (under Advanced -> Posts & Tags -> Compact Uploader).
The compact uploader (which is actually the old original uploader) is made to be more compact and as a less guided post uploader while the current "new" uploader is made to be more newcomer-friendly.

I'm for adding at least a small disclaimer on the "Other Tags" section to only use valid and existing tags whenever possible, and then direct them to a separate page for guidance in creating new tags.

tbh I think for most people using that compact uploader is a really bad idea because of how easy it is to forget specific categories of tags the full uploader calls out explicitly
I know for the short time I used it I often forgot both species and artist tags
