The gist I've gotten from reading forum posts mentioning pussy_floss is that it gets to stay because it's an existing slang phrase. Is that right? Seems weird considering pussy itself is also a well-known and often used slang word, which didn't hinder its removal due to it being offensive/vulgar. It gave me a bit of confusion when I couldn't find the appropriate tag because I was only using "vulva_"

A word replacement wouldn't be idea because, let's be real, vulva_floss sounds bad. If it needs to be replaced then maybe something like thong_between_labia would work, though imo it's an imperfect fit for non-human vulvas:

Honestly, we don't need to change it if it is already an established slang.
We already have plenty of examples where the slang version is kept; e.g., penis has cock_ring, cock_and_ball_torture, dicknipples, etc.
Also, the main reason we changed from pussy -> vulva is not because it is "offensive/vulgar", it is because it can be confused with vaginal_canal, so this is a non-issue here.

Best move would be to request an alias and see what the community votes. I know regsmutt said it sounds bad but maybe not everyone agrees?
I think slang words are fine in cases where it's part of established terminology.
Though I think we should alias vulva floss to pussy floss tag, since it will result to pussy floss being shown in search autofill if you try to search for vulva floss.
Alternatively the phrase could be replaced with something more neutral and descriptive (I cannot personally come up with anything that does not sound clunky though).

I think that would make it far more unclear what the tag is for, since it makes it sounds like something to do with inserting something into the vagina itself.

I didn't get that impression, judging by what spe said in the BUR thread. Regardless, I think something like fabric_between_labia could work, as I wouldn't consider the tag applicable to non-humanoid vulvas. You could also argue for a more generic intepretation (some sort of genital_wedgie), but IMO that would pull in cloaca/genital_slit and would be better as a separate tag.

The reason was literally stated on the first post of the BUR, with @spe even later stating that the "change is primarily because vulva is a much more correct and precise term" and that the "crudeness of the term was a secondary reason".
There was even a direct mention of pussy_floss as being a tag with no good alias target to go to, similarly to pussyjob.

That is worse. It's inaccurate (the vagina is not being penetrated or even necessarily touched in most of these) and it sounds like an unpleasant medical procedure.
Is clothing_between_labia appropriate? Afaict that encapsulates the definition of "pussy floss" entirely. Considering pussy_floss would be aliased to this anyways, I can't image it would cause any confusion. It's also an obvious choice one would type if they didn't know the term "pussy floss".
