Topic: [Feature Request] Dagger (†) marker on artist tags for any confirmed deceased artists

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

So this idea came about after finding out one of my favourite artists, The Hookaloof, had passed away a month ago. Looking at how FurAffinity adds an infinity symbol to deceased users, I had the thought that e621 could do something similar with user tags. Just like how the "?" button goes to a wiki or bio, the † symbol would inform that the user that the artist in question has passed away.

What I had in mind was it looking like this, though I can't decide if the dagger mark should be before or after the ? or even at the end of the tag:

Artists
? † ArtistUsername

I have a mockup image of it here, too

The tag list will also have + and - next to the tag when there are search parameters to add/remove the tag to the search, and a check mark next to the artist tag if they self-uploaded it. Adding another marker when they're deceased feels like it would be too much clutter (I kinda feel there already is too much clutter, to be honest).

Having that symbol on their artist or wiki page could work, though. IIRC, the artist page used to have a Status line which could say if they've passed away or not, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

This doesn't need to appear on every post of the artist to remind users they have passed.
I also feel that it isn't the purpose or business of the site to be "marking" them as such.

All of these information could be easily added now on the artist's wiki instead.

Plus an eye and a heart if you have re6 installed

Artists used to have an "Active" field, but that was just a soft deletion, not anything special
That got replaced with real deletions over a year ago

assuming that it's implemented, how do we verify that they're actually dead? unless their death are very noteworthy (on the news and stuff) or very long ago (pre 20th century artist), do we use a third party obituary?

I feel like this is not the biggest concern on this matter. Furaffinity has had this feature for long while, and it's handled through staff being contacted by family or close friends to have the infinity symbol added on profile to signify the passing of the artist. I think furaffinity can be used as "source" for this information, as well as family and friends contacting to e6 to inform about an artist's passing. This is also something that is often posted about on the social by family and close friends, which can be used as confirmation.
