Topic: Question about information on an artist’s wiki page

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I see filled-out artist wikis so rarely that it’s hard for me to understand what they’re supposed to look like — what kind of information should actually be included?

Should there be a link to a price list or commission info? What about personal information like gender, age, country, pronouns, orientation, and other details the artist has shared on their social media? If that information is needed, should it be copied exactly as the artist wrote it, or rewritten in a descriptive way like “this artist was born and lives in Furland, is married to Princess Luna, their main character is Labubu named Olga,” and so on?

Should tags and links to the artist’s characters also be added to the wiki? mention what the artist most often draws — whether it’s fandom content or original characters? What about projects, games, or comics, if there are any? And the year they started their accounts?

The wikis I’ve seen are all very different from each other, so I’d like to understand more clearly how this should be done and formatted.

There are no fixed rules when it comes to writing an artist tag's wiki, let alone an artist's page (see howto:wiki editing).
Most of the time, these pages are just left empty with only the bare essential information, such as the artist's various links.

In my opinion though:

  • An artist's links and galleries are absolutely necessary, especially those with multiple aliases/accounts.
  • An artist's speciality may be added if it best describes the type of work they create.
  • Their characters and projects may also be added, in a collapsible section if it's lengthy.

However:

  • I don't think an artist's personal information (i.e., age, sex, location/country) should be added into any of the pages, unless they are coming from a WikiFur article or added by the artists themselves.
    • I personally feel it's a violation of privacy to have such info added on a page that I do not directly control. Moreover, such private information could be easily acquired and used maliciously by bad actors.
  • "Lore" based information (such as their history, relationships, orientation, etc.) should be kept at a minimum or in a collapsible section if necessary.
    • There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it shouldn't clog up the page with too much info.
  • Price list and commission info works better if the artist has an account here themselves, which would be added onto their profile pages directly instead.
    • I feel adding such info onto their pages for them isn't our business and may lead to issues (such as with outdated info, people asking for commissions in the comments, etc.).

I feel that's a bit redundant since the Artist page already has links for their galleries. Adding them to the wiki page too just results an increased amount of work to update their links as they join new sites and leave others, often causing them to get out of sync over time as people just update the one list and not the other.

Personally, I'd rather just focus on the Artist page rather than the wiki as the links are absolutely useful. Just creating an Artist page is helpful as that shows the number of posts under that tag that source to various galleries like FA or DA.

But I'd just leave the Artist wiki for the artist themselves to fill out if they'd like to, an optional "About Me" section if you will. After all, only the artist can really know what they'd feel comfortable sharing with people on e621.
