Topic: Twitter / X NSFW Age-Restriction in Australia

Posted under Art Talk

This weekend Twitter/X rolled out age-restriction on adult content posts for Australian users. This is not required by the Australian social media laws (which instead entirely ban under-16s from platforms) and may be an indication they plan to rollout this feature globally, as Discord planned after doing the same in December when likewise not required to.
On one hand, Twitter is happy to auto-verify certain accounts based on account or email age. On the other hand, Twitter's age verification only functions within the X mobile app, and anyone on desktop/browser can go fuck themselves.*

*Unless you head to an account's Media tab, in which everything is uncensored.

The same has happened in Brazil today. There is no option to display adult content on the browser version of X yet, so it's very unpractical to use it.

When I browsed the app today, they offered me the option to take a selfie to verify my age, and it worked.
Then, all I had to to was go at: Settings > Privacy and safety > Content you see > check the option Display media that may contain sensitive content.
It's done, I can see adult content while on the browser without restrictions.

Interesting to know newer countries in the rollout will at least be able to view adult content post-verification. I can confirm it still only functions inside the app for Australia.

I'm in EU and my "X (formerly twitter)" account is created 2017 and I still started getting pop ups to verify age via their app.
On firefox I installed "insensitiveX" browser plugin and I can view the posts again. But who knows how long it takes till it's patched

+1 on the "insensitiveX" extension working on desktop

...however, it only works because the 'blur' censor is done client-side. Twitter could change that at any moment. Hell, they already kind of did: Twitter enforces India's NSFW ban server-side in a way that can not be bypassed by any client-side extension or trick. The only workaround is convincingly spoofing your geolocation to one of the locations without such a restriction, which is becoming harder as website owners and legislators alike are becoming very hostile to tools like VPNs.

I would take this time to back up the work of any artists you like and potentially follow them on other social media sites before the walls finish closing in.

Just saying, any time's a good time to jump ship from Xitter, Dood!

Left a while back ago for Bluesky, and the only thing I had to adjust too was
not having a media option in DMs. Everything else is a heck of a lot better
Compared to the the Xitter sinking, Dood =‿=)~★

It's not my choice. There's a ton of artists who still only have a social media presence on twitter. And even for the artists who move to a new website, very few of them ever bother reposting their whole existing gallery there. Twitter is the only place an enormous amount of art can be found.

And the worst part about that is that Xitter keeps inching that backlog off a cliff, Day by day.
Giving artists fewer and fewer reasons to stay there. From censoring post so they can't even be
seen, to outright theft by adding an "Edit" button to all stills there.
(The reason I left that place to burn, Dood = =)

Really is a crappy spot to be in and I really do feel sorry for both the artist and the fans
There if Twitter is their main platform. It's becoming "Dead"-itter day by day, Dood.

I mean, I had one of my Twitter accounts locked for "suspicious activity" after I posted an SFM render of Lash from Deadlock. Thankfully, I was able to unlock it, but I've stopped posting stuff on Twitter ever since. I'm still finding better platforms to post my SFW and NSFW artwork besides Bluesky, though.

Bsky is one of the few where I post art. I never got a habit using furaffinity actively

tumblr got hit by porn ban, deviantart got ai slopified, twitter was bought by elon, facebook data collection lawsuit, discord and many other sites are about to require ID

I'm starting to see a pattern here; every time i find a platform i like, it's ruined by a billionaire

Oh yeah, totally! FA, Ink, Even e621 are better artist-showcasing sites than bluesky.
But if you're looking for a 'Replacement' to Xitter that does all the things Twitter
used too, then "Bluey and the ink machine" is a pretty neat one, Dood!
