The tag alias #82293 intersex -> intersex_(disambiguation) is pending approval.

It has come up countless times that the intersex tag has numerous issues, among them:

It encourages bad tagging

The intersex/intersex, intersex/male, and intersex/female buttons on the uploader have absolutely exacurbated the issue, but it does still happen outside of that
I've added some stats at the bottom

Those who have the real world condition the word comes from often find its usage offensive

While I see this point as a bit weak for actual change due to our regular redefinition of terms to fit our needs, it's still a bonus point on top

It doesn't solve any problems

We are not stuck back in 2020 when we could only search six tags, we can afford adding 4 more tags to a search query (the blacklist can also total 150,000 characters)

As is, the existing implication & alias trees are half baked

Many maleherm tags just flat out don't exist (this can be partially blamed on the lack of maleherm content, but I don't see why the tags for all 4 intersex genders were not created all at once)
Only herm/intersex is aliased to intersex/intersex, intersex/herm is not
The tag tree results in each additional specifier tag adding at least one middleman tag,

male_penetrating_gynomorph larger_male smaller_gynomorph dominant_male submissive_male becomes 20 tags
male_penetrating_female larger_male smaller_female dominant_male submissive_female becomes 15 tags

Are they even used enough to warrant this entire tree? From search trends on 2026-03-22, here's the searched intersex tags for that day (anything not listed here was not listed in the data, which bottoms out at 100 searches)

We don't have any data on how the search actually looked when it was made, aliases are normalized and prefixes (- or ~) are stripped. This is also server side tracking, so it includes api users (bots), https://tagme.dev, and any other interactions that aren't directly from a user visiting the site in their browser.

The only one worth any real note here is intersex itself, though I'd bet on the high usage being both negations and the futa alias. We still don't have any data on blacklist usage, but considering the high impact this might have on blacklists, I'm sure we will find out eventually. Ideally we'll be able to get some script ran to update blacklists before any changes are made.

Beyond data and issues, we've had numerous topics about the tag (I'm sure I'm missing several)

From these topics have come some suggestions, the primary if which has been renaming the tag:

Altersex

A request for this rename has been tried and rejected: topic #47102
While from the outset "altered sex" may seem to make sense, we'd run into crossgender and alternate_species like issues with this

Salmacian (while primarily mentioned to replace herm, I have seen it mentioned for intersex as well)

Out of the gate the name is entirely meaningless to most. According to salmacian.org, "Salmacian is a term for people who wish to have a mixed genital set.".
Aside from being opaque in what it means, the definition given doesn't seem to be what we'd need for a rename.

Gynandromorph/Gynandromorphism

Do I need to mention how unintuivie this would be? Not to mention the hell it would wreck on autocomplete

There have likely been a few other terms tossed around here and there, but none that have stuck enough for me to remember. I personally don't think renaming the tag would do us any good, as currently it's just functioning for an umbrella for a subset of our gender tags, which is entirely odd considering andromorph and gynomorph are practically polar opposites, beyond not having the "typical" genital configuration (but if we start adding categories for that, where's the category for unusual_genitalia?)

With all of that absolute mess out of the way, the best course of action has to be invalidating intersex. It has long since outlived its usefulness, and its current existence sparks a debate about it at least once every year, if not every few months. While nuking the tree may cause some pain points for the time being, I firmly believe it will be well worth it, just like how getting rid of the cub tag in topic #41659 was well worth it.

Just the process to tear down the existing system is currently looking like nearly 700 BUR lines, so rather than create nearly 30 BURs I'm just creating this alias for voting, the plan after we teardown the existing systems is to disambiguate intersex, alias what we can to their closest valid tag, then dump the rest into the disambiguation tag and nuke it. Possibly in the future we can alias to the lore tag, but right now the tag is too tainted to do anything but void it.

Technically the tag does appear superfluous, -andromorph -gynomorph -herm -maleherm would catch negations, and ~andromorph ~gynomorph ~herm ~maleherm would catch inclusions, so long as there's no "intersex" option that excludes all four of these gender tags, but at the same time people are really resistant to learning alternation syntax, else we wouldn't have people trying to imply Lucario Z to Lucario, God of Hyperdeath Asriel to young Asriel Dreemurr, etc.

The reasoning for removal is consistent with justifications I've used to downvote certain implications in the past, and there are certainly plenty of cases where people have been tagging intersex/female on solo gynomorphs, but I immediately fear that it'd be really disruptive to a large portion of viewers.

At the same time, what the fuck is going on that a single tagger would make post #5993209 dominant_female, dominant_intersex, and male/female at the same time?

If we had a developer on it I'd really want some way for the search form to suggest common alternations like every version of Asriel, every intersex option, etc.

We got by with killing the cub tag, which was a combination of ~young_anthro ~young_feral and maybe young_taur if it was a tuesday in september, I see no reason to keep combination tags like this when we have 40 whole tags to play with
The advanced syntax we have now makes it an even better time to toss it out the window, ( ~gynomorph ~andromorph ~herm ~maleherm ) is equivalent to what intersex should be

No matter how you slice it the majority of the intersex genders are under/mistagged, and I place at least 70% of the blame on the tags existing and another 20% on the upload form

nearly 27% of male/intersex is complete junk, and 22% of female/intersex

I want to have one single term to encompass all non-male or female characters, be it for searching or blacklisting purposes.
For the reasons stated, the benefits do not seem to outweigh the cost that comes with invalidating the tag completely.

While I agree it is problematic for users to simply tag intersex, I do not believe it is justification enough to invalidate the tag completely. It may be a Sisyphean task to fix it, but it is fixable nonetheless.

Meh to nuking it. Typing -f -intersex is a convenient way to search for only masculine or ambiguous characters, while typing -f -herm -gynomorph is slightly more inconvenient.

Both andromorph and maleherm are masculine, if you'd plan on only excluding herm and gynomorph were intersex gone then I don't get why you're entirely excluding intersex

the tag just shouldn't exist by our standards, it's a weird combo catch-all tag for four groups which are all, more-or-less on four opposite corners of the gender expression, like, spectrum. the only reason it exists now is because it existed in the past when the standards weren't as set-in-stone, and it's been allowed to remain based, basically entirely on its seniority.

I'd figured it existed from the time that we only had 6 tags to play with (the implication #248 for herm is so old it doesn't even have a date)
With how old that implication is (early 2012 at the absolute latest), it would actually date back to when we only had 2 tags to play with eons ago

at that time telling people to swap one tag for four would be entirely unreasonable if even possible, but now that we've got 40 that purpose should be entirely null

The issue of people simply tagging something as intersex, rather than the 4 available subtags/genders.
This is going to be a problem for any umbrella tag and their subtags once they attained a very high post count.

I feel the issue is not going to be limited to one's own casual searches.

A bunch of tagging projects rely on filtering intersex from their results in order for tag fixes to be made.
Removing that option and expecting everybody to use -andromorph -gynomorph -herm -maleherm moving forward is going to be very inconvenient.

Just like cub should have been aliased away some 6 years ago, but it took until 2023 and while we still get the occasional straggler, we're more or less over it now

No one ever wants to actually push the needed changes to large tags because people are afraid of change, but change is required to keep the site functioning
we shouldn't be keeping around tags that wouldn't even make it past community judgement today just because they've existed for over a decade

yeah, but intersex is not an umbrella tag, it's a combo tag, like cub was before we dropkicked it out of an open window.

umbrella tags cover a coherent grouping of subtags. all of the sub tags have something in common with the parent. an example of an umbrella would be female example all involve different builds, sizes, ages, forms, pairings, etc. of/with a female character, which has its own freestanding definition.

but with intersex, on the other hand, its "subtags" don't do that. like, gynomorph and andromorph are complete opposites, each sharing more with male and female than each other. and while herm and maleherm do share having two sets of genitals, which makes them similar to each other, it does not make them similar to the other two. there's no definition of intersex (as we use it) that isn't referencing one of the tags that implies it.

+1 to this. It has irked me to no end that "futa" still aliases to a valid tag when the term itself should be invalid due to ambiguity. And the problems with the uploader... and the concept of basic decency towards intersex people not to conflate their identity with "an umbrella term for anything that isn't male or female or ambiguous"...

I think it's time for it to go. All it does is enable bad tagging and inflate tag count, save us from the monstrous trees of implications that will NEVER get wiki pages. Oh god, the implication trees...

I'm 😐 on nuking intersex, even if I don't often use it myself. It clearly has people searching for it, negating it or blacklisting it. The name may be a problem, but that's never been a reason to nuke a tag as far as I know.

All the umbrella tags we've been forced to create through implications? Yeah I'm 👍👍👍👍 on that. Who is actually searching for slightly_chubby_intersex or gynomorph_penetrating_intersex?

The male/intersex and female/intersex tags being included on the upload form was a mistake that should've been remedied years ago since it causes incomplete tagging at best, or even incorrect tagging at worst (e.g. when people think male/intersex is for a male-presenting intersex person and apply it to a solo post)

Ding ding ding! My thoughts exactly.

Intersex is a legitimate identity, and reducing it down to either a porn category or a tag that serves an inaccurate and pointless purpose is doing the community a disservice. And yes, I do believe that futa should be straight up invalidated due to it now being seen as a slur (and it being ambiguous, too), but we'll get there when we get there.

My reason for wanting it gone is the same as I expressed in a previous thread:

It's odd to me to have an umbrella tag for herm, maleherm, andromorph, and gynomorph, when andromorph and gynomorph have the complete opposite set of genitals/breasts of each other, and maleherm and gynomorph are also quite different, and where every single tag incorporating one of those 4 sexes has at least one duplicate tag with intersex in its place. There's no umbrella tag for things like this with male, female, and ambiguous_gender.

The only consistent attribute these four sex tags have is "they're not male, female, or ambiguous". Each one provides different configurations of reproductive organs, with no consistency for what ones you'll get. And if you don't care that much about what genitals a character has, why bother with a sex tag at all? And if "not male, female, or ambiguous" is important enough for a tag, wouldn't "is male, female, or ambiguous" also be relevant enough to tag? male, female, and ambiguous may be the majority, but there's still a good number of herm, maleherm, andromorph, and gynomorph posts.

What about other groupings? Wouldn't umbrellas for "masculine sexes" (male, andromorph, maleherm) and "feminine sexes" (female, gynomorph, herm) also be useful? What about "penis havers" and "vulva havers", "non-penis havers" and "non-vulva havers"? What would actually be useful for people to search or blacklist, that's worth the added tag bloat?

I am for this, but from a different perspective.

So many <adjective>_<sex> and <sex>_<verb>_<sex> tags enter combinatoric hell with intersex existing. It's one of the primary reason I've voted against such proposals in the past. We can eschew a whole bunch of tags implying intersex_penetrating_intersex, for example, which ends up fairly useless anyway when half the subtags (those that have a penis) make up the vast majority of the first intersex in that tag. Functionally, a lot of such tags like this mostly exist out of the obligation of the intersex tag existing, even if they don't make sense for many of the tags underneath intersex.

On top of that, I think this will allow E621 to better communicate that the remaining non-lore tags are sex form tags rather than gender identity tags. Right now, that argument becomes muddied because intersex is kind of sitting in the crossroads, not really meaning anything beyond "not part of the sex binary", which seems really outdated to me. This could go a long way to bringing back some goodwill to the site among a group of people who've criticized this tag existing. While that shouldn't be the primary motivator, by any means, I think it shouldn't be discounted either.

The reason why I tag intersex and usually not a more specific tag is because I'm specifically told its a bad idea to do so. Every one of the tags has a massive warning at the top. I don't want to get a record for mistagging, yet I am positive there is one character who is not entirely male or female. It's safe to tag, and is useful to allow tag projects to see if the correct tag is missing (I.E. there is an intersex tag but no specific corresponding tag.)

This tag is not useless, and I don't know why the OP is saying that. It's heavily used for blacklists and for searching, and can be used to see if a post is missing the correct tag.

It's a valid umbrella tag. It is for characters who have both male and female features. All of the tags under it fit that definition. The reason why we don't have the same for male, female, and ambiguous is that they're mutually exclusive. (IE: If a male character had a female part added, it would then fall under one of the intersex tags, and no longer be male. If an ambiguous had a female part added, it wouldn't be ambiguous anymore. However, if an andromorph had a penis added, it would still be intersex).

Arguing that the tag is not valid because it contains characters who are on "opposite ends" is flawed. It's not for that, it's for if there are two different traits (male and female) on the same character. Contrary to what is being stated, this is not automatically invalid. For example, we have two_tone_body. It is not crazy for two_tone_body to consist of characters with pitch black fur and characters with pure white fur simultaneously in the same search results.

I'm also kind of disappointed the BUR mentions people who agree and asks them to vote, but doesn't take the time to do the same for the opposition.

This is another problem. You're not supposed to tag intersex itself directly, which the wiki explicitly states "Please avoid manual tagging, and instead use one of the 4 intersex sub-types listed below". intersex should only be added through tagging andromorph, gynomorph, herm, or maleherm. If a character can't be visually identified as one of those, they can't be visually identified as intersex for tagging purposes.

It would be intersex because of the definition of intersex. It's a tautology. If male, female, and ambiguous_gender were collected under it's own umbrella tag, lets call it primsex for argument, then if a primsex ambiguous_gender character had a female part added, it would still be primsex. Or if a male had a penis removed, it would still be primsex (either still male, or ambiguous_gender, depending on the character's remaining attributes).

Except not really. That would be true for herm and maleherm, but andromorph and gynomorph are largely tied to body type. You can have a character with a penis and "breasts", and be declared male if the body type makes it look more like an overweight male with moobs (or muscular male with big pecs), or gynomorph if the body type makes it more like a busty feminine character with a penis. The same general traits, just interpreted differently based on body type. Similarly, you can have a character with a vulva and flat chest, and be declared female if the body type looks more feminine, or andromorph if the body type looks more masculine. Same general traits, interpreted differently.

These tag projects sound more like a problem created by the intersex tag itself than a benefit of it. While disambiguating the tag wont stop people from applying it, I imagine the red invalid tag at the top will be more effective at telling people of the need of a more specific tag instead of letting over seven thousand posts without one pile up. I also think invalid tags can be used in tag projects just fine so we wont lose this utility.

The verbosity isn't a problem due to the removal of intersex, it's a sitewide issue. For example, the simple act of searching for only art of men (aka the primary desire of an entire very common sexual orientation) requires the ridiculous 54 character string "(~male ~andromorph ~maleherm) -female -gynomorph -herm"

and vice versa for lesbian art. Extremely basic gender searches requiring such a ridiculous query is a problem resulting from the fundamentally silly way gender tags are implemented here, not a problem specific to the removal of intersex. In fact, removing intersex brings us one step closer to untangling the knot.

Literally most days. I actually genuinely use the tag a lot. Of course, most of the tag is populated by pics that will be either herm or gynomorph, which does mean I usually need to specify maleherm or andromorph if I really want to search for them, but that's just a pure numbers game.

As far as I know, failing to add a valid general tag is not a reason for mod action. So mods would have to review all these instances of the intersex tag being applied without a more specific tag just to at most give the user a nudge to be more meticulous the next time, without any guarantee this will solve the problem. It doesn't look like a good use of moderation time when a more efficient solution is available.

"The mods" don't have time to hunt down every post with an incorrect tag and fix them, there are literally hundreds of thousands of incorrect tag applications, with thousands more added daily, the community cleans up what it can but we do not have the manpower to outnumber the sheer amount of mistagging that will always exist

Extreme cases of mistagging are handled but it is not worth giving a record to someone that incorrectly used intersex once, especially both intersex/male and intersex/female are on the upload form despite never being valid on their own

I'm all for cutting down on tag bloat, particularly all the submissive_older_X_penetrating_slightly_chubby_Y_in_space type of combination tags, except for maybe a few specific ones that are actually being used and would be annoying to replace with multiple separate tags.

Neutral on whether to invalidate the base tag.
