but something being popular, for some reason, is just an extreme turn-off to me. even if it's something I know I'd probably like otherwise.

I have a friend who was super into the Amazing Digital Circus for the first few episodes, but after it got insanely popular he decided it had gotten bad because of the fans' influence.
I didn't have the heart to tell him the entire plot was planned out from the beginning.
