Topic: depricate black and white tag?

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #12819 is pending approval.

remove implication black_and_white (78938) -> monochrome (467690)

Reason: black and white tag is notoriously misunderstood and it keeps pilling up with mistags as the time goes on. the tag insist to have only pitch black and white as the only strict colors even without grey as significant color but the majority of posts tagged with it contradicts it. here are posts just by the first page and keeps going by each pages:

greyscale
post #6058389

black and blue
or
blue monochrome/bluescale
post #6051130

partially colored
post #6049746

sepia
post #6040023

any solutions? we can then alias it to monochrome/greyscale and suggest/prioritize high contrast (by how danbooru is doing) and/or even implement new tag line_art_only (considering how much a mess line_art tag is and linework is considerably a default as characters having eyes/nose/ears/etc).

If we want to be technical about it, black and white is achrome, as in it has no color (except all colors at once versus no colors at all; which is which depending on whether it's pigment or light).

The wiki pages are rather confusing too, I guess.
Colored line art should have a similar definition to line art (Only the outline of the character is drawn)
But instead the wiki says it can be used for fully colored pieces.

The problem with aliasing this away is that the manners in which it's mistagged is too broad to pick 1 alternate. We're gonna have to manually weed out the incorrect usages, so I really wouldn't choose an alias for this.

My solution would be to invalidate black_and_white & have the wiki primarily point to 3 tags:

  • some replacement tag that's more explicit (e.g. black_monochrome)
  • grayscale
  • The umbrella tag monochrome

I'd also add some other suggestions under that, like

I guess these are achrome if that's the case. monochrome transparent_background misleading_thumbnail

I think it's not that hard to clean up incorrect ones coz they stand out among real monochrome posts.

I think [color]_monochrome would cause the least confusion if we are aliasing it to anything.
But it still can't really prevent mistags when people add black and white on posts with any color in it.

technically all of these examples i've shown fall under the monochrome umbrella (partially colored is usually an exception and i would place my bet it's way less utilized than those that implicate monochrome to be a problem), so i think it's reasonable pick for it for alias than greyscale that i coupled with and which i gave the impression of.

other than that, i'll be fine making it invalid and become a wastebasket for picking the alternatives suggested by the wiki page.
