Topic: What is the best song lyric(s) you can name?

Posted under Off Topic

I know the Music Hole thread exists, but it's not necessarily a place to fully music music and moreso just a place to dump the music you find/like. I was wondering what the people here think are good song lyrics, something that they really fuck with. Although I'm probably biased because I'm a Kanye fan, my favorite lyric of all time is likely "I'm liable to be a liability" from his unreleased song, "See Me Again."

"With a million lies, the truth will rise to tear you apart" -Shinedown - How Did You Love

"How can I brace myself for razor blades on whips?" Poets of the Fall - Maybe Tomorrow Is A Better Day

pretty good ones, anyways i just remembered some other good lyrics from "Follow God" by kanye yet again since whenever i have a hyperfixation on one thing it nullifies everything else:

"Lifelike, this is what your life like, try to live your life right
People really know you, push your buttons like typewrite
This is like a movie, but it's really very lifelike
Every single night, right, every single fight, right?"

the entire song is a banger but those first four lines are my favorite just from how they flow

The full version of the Japanese Pokémon Journeys opening (no, really...), 1・2・3 by After The Rain:

君は 君は いつの間にやら
大人になっちゃいないかい?

ほこりを被った ボロ着の 右ぽっけに置いてきた
片手に収まる冒険 ボクらの全てだった
あの頃の思い出が 君を探しているよ

(You, you, before I knew it
You're all grown up now, aren't you?

Kept in the right pocket of your dusty worn down clothes
An adventure that could be held in one hand--it was our everything
Our memories from back then are searching for you

ok i managed to remember Miracle Musical (and by extension The Mind Electric) exists after like a solid 9 months:

"Spiraling down thy majesty
I beg of thee, have mercy on me
I was just a boy, you see
I plead of thee, have sympathy for me"

this really transitions great into the bridge of the song

"I'll never forget the day I died / Love memories frozen and denied / Flower of my heart withered and dried" Hellyeah - Love Falls (the whole song helped me through my roughest depression)

"If you still care, DON'T EVER LET ME KNOW!!!!!" Slipknot - Snuff. That final line was delivered with such raw emotion, and you can hear Corey Taylor's voice completely shatter at the end. It's even more heart wrenching watching his live solo performance of the song just watching his heart break more and more with each verse

My feet can′t fail me now
My feet can't fail me now
My feet can′t fail me now
My feet can′t fail me now
My feet can′t fail me now
My feet can′t fail me now

"I hear echoes of your laughter in the corners of my mind
While I memorize each detail of your intricate design
In your hair there is a symphony
Your lips, a string quartet
They tell stories of a Neon Valley Street
Where we first met

Now somewhere time pursues us
As we love in Technicolor
But I dwell in silence on your words
Which move me like none other

This time I shall be unafraid
And violence will not move me
This time we will relax
This time we will stay in our movie"

From Janelle Monae's 2010 album The ArchAndroid. An album (and the album before this one) that tells a story of an android falling in love with a human android hunter. It's such a beautiful album, this song is called "BaBopByeYa" where the story finally concludes with her having to leave the love of her life for her own protection.

Heavily recommend The ArchAndroid and the album Metropolis: Suite I if you like music that tells a story!

“But I can't stand waking up and nobody knows it
I'll never find the strength to change what I need
Is this who I'll always be”

Amigo the devil- another man’s grave

This guy is amazing at conveying emotion through lyrics. That verse describes loneliness and desperation in way that hits too close. Not somewhere I am now just somewhere I’ve been
The second part of that verse is what really gets me
It implies knowing what needs to be change, but still allowing every opportunity for change to pass through inaction

"Two packs of cigarettes a day
The strongest whiskey Kentucky can make
That's a recipe to put a vagabond on his hands and knees
I watched it all up close, I knew him more than most
I saw a side of him he never showed
Full of sympathy for a world that wouldn't let him be

That's the man he was
Have you heard enough?

What a shame, what a shame
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame
To have to beg you to see we're not all the same
What a shame"

Shinedown - What a Shame

Delivering a powerful message that everyone is fighting their own battles, even when they appear okay on the surface

"I wake up one morning, strangers say hello to me."

"Tomorrow their names will be carved onto stones..."

"We're going home alive! I'm a terrible liar."

"Forgive me, That's not the-"

"Arc de Triomphe!"

Hellfire Daisuke Ishiwatari

Love this song, Dood~!

Also a fan of-

"The sky above the clouds-!"

"A rainbow that fate has devoured-!"

"I GAVE UP HOOO~PE"

"even if it is hell"

"I'm gonna-"

Maxwell's Silver Hammer from The Beatles

The lyrics are about a serial killer murdering his crush, teacher and presumably everyone in a courtroom, but the music is your typical upbeat Beatles Rock n' Roll, which gives the whole song a hillariously surreal contrast

Kinda like how the song Pumped Up Kicks has a very upbeat tone, yet the lyrics detail a school shooting

The Last Human Gateway by IQ really resonates with me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IqWaDKWwc8
The lyrics are mostly nonsensical and the story is told through loose descriptions of the atmosphere rather than specific consecutive events, but I don't mind it. I find the song quite amazing honestly.

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes
They're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

This whole song moves me. More specifically the lines I posted nearly moves me to tears

not sure why i didn't mention this before, but Mama's Boyfriend (one of my favorite unreleased kanye songs) has these lyrics that i really like

"He walked in our lives, I was only five
Superman pajamas, I was super-duper fly"

Weigh down on me, stay 'til morning
Way down, would you say I'm worthy?

Bad Omens - Just Pretend

Just the way it's delivered as the outro and a cappella just gives me chills

i lowkey gotta start listening to some of the stuff you like twin

You hate the shape when you have to see
An unfamiliar face on an all-black screen
Can you hear me through the white noise, friend?
Repeat the phrase they force you to read
"If I wanna be great, I don't wanna be me"
Can you hear me through the white noise?
Can you hear me through the white noise?

Bad Omens - Artificial Suicide

I fell asleep, while watching Spike TV
After 10 cups of coffee, and you're
STILL NOT HERE.
Dreaming of a song, but something went wrong
And you can't tell anyone, 'coz
NO ONE'S HERE.
Left me here alone, and I shoulda stayed home
After 10 cups of coffee I'm thinkin'

(Where'd you go?)
NOBODY LIKES YOU
EVERYBODY LEFT YOU
(Where'd you go?)
THEY'RE ALL OUT WITHOUT YOU
HAVING FUN.
(Where'd you go?)
EVERYONE LEFT YOU
NOBODY LIKES YOU
(Where'd you go?)
THEY'RE ALL OUT WITHOUT YOU
HAVING FUN.
(Where'd you go?)

Green Day – Homecoming (Specifically, Section III: Nobody Likes You)

One of my favorites right now is
“Don’t get mad at the system
You can’t change the system
Get mad at your lover
You can affect your lover
Like pulling out nails with the back of the hammer”
From Beast Monster Thing by Car Seat Headrest. It does an amazing job of walking you through both the subconscious mental processes of people in abusive relationships and how much we’re impacted by top down abuse without even realizing. It hooks you into agreeing with it initially because it usually does feel futile getting angry at whatever system you feel like is oppressing you when there’s nothing you can do to change it, and then it pulls the rug out from under you by so explicitly calling you to misdirect that anger onto people who you can change and do have power over, which unfortunately is something we’re probably all guilty of even if for fleeting moments that we immediately regret. Car Seat Headrest is really good at illustrating struggles like this in extremely poignant and simple phrases in my opinion.

I made a short-term fix for a long-term problem
Can I learn to love these chains?
I know I had a point, but now I forgot it
Well I'm circling the drain
No, I can't stop feeling like every day is exactly the same
With a one-track mind, I don't think I can change
Trapped in memories stuck on replay, replay, REPLAY!!!

A Day To Remember - Resentment

I wanna say, the instrumental breakdown in this song would bounce around in your skull if you have the bass set up correctly and headphones on

I'm not motherfucking AANGRRRRYYYYYYYY!
I'M NOT ANGRY ANYMOOOOOORE!
I'M NOT MOTHERFUCKING CRAAAAAAAAZZZZZZY!
I'M NOT CRAZY ANYMOOORE!

How could you leave me alone?
(Now I got you listening, motherfucker!)
Abandoned and then disowned
(You fucking threw me away!)
Never even had a name
(Bitch!)
You forgot me all the same
(Fuck yooooooou!)
I choose my own home

Fuck YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUU!

Gemini Syndrome - Abandoned

This is by far their heaviest song and a very personal and hurtful song for the singer over his mother abandoning him at birth and refused to accept him when he found her. The second half of the song feels very cathartic as he's just screaming out all of his pent up anger.

Link to the video

I'm alive in here, so alive in here
Pull it down a little, please
I'm open wide in here, slow to rise in here
Saving grace and killing me

You say this only makes me incomplete
I'm kicked around and rendered obsolete
Tell the mad chameleon he's not welcome anymore
I know what I'm looking for

Somewhere close, somewhere safe
Somewhere I know, I know, I'll never live in chains
The one is not aware
So stay away from me, I'm just too young to care

Stone Sour - Tired

Some lyrics I'm fond of:

Little pictures in my head, turning inside-out again
'Cause fucking up takes practice, I feel I'm well rehearsed
Because the past is a bully and the future's even worse
Tell me what you fear 'cause I can feel it like a curse

- Only One by Goo Goo Dolls

It's 4:30 a.m. on a Tuesday
It doesn't get much worse than this
In beds in little rooms, in buildings in the middle
Of these lives which are completely meaningless
Help me stay awake, I'm falling

Asleep in perfect blue buildings
Beside the green apple sea
I wanna get me a little oblivion, baby
I'm trying to keep myself away from myself and me

Well, I got bones beneath my skin, mister
There's a skeleton in every man's house
Beneath the dust and love and sweat that hangs on everybody
There's a dead man trying to get out
So please help me stay awake, I'm falling

- Perfect Blue Buildings by Counting Crows

Where's the cooling wind?
Where's the evergreen fields?
Where's my mother's open arms?
Where's my father lion heart?
It's like the sun's gone down
Sleeps in the hollow ground, now
With the autumn's brown leaves
With the one who never grieves

Poets of the Fall - Where Do We Draw the Line

Illustrate all my pain
And set it all ABLAAAAAZE!

So how do I apologize
And put the tears back in your eyes?
On every canvas that I paint
Is a masterpiece of my mistakes
And in the light of my demise
I see my failures in your eyes
On every canvas that I paint
Is a masterpiece of my mistakes

Motionless In White - Masterpiece

I can't find my way back home
Lost my head down there somewhere
Should we just be gone alone?
Lived in doubt and fear I've shown
Gazing down a long, grey road
I see the stop sign way up ahead
Sun is burning on my face
Sun is setting me on fire

Puddle of Mudd - Nobody Told Me

Yikes is probably my second favorite song off of ye ngl

"Shit could get menacin', frightenin', find help
Sometimes, I scare myself, myself
Shit could get menacin', frightenin', find help
Sometimes, I scare, myself, myself"

Force-fed and forgotten are the children of the sun
We refuse to believe in anything
Once again, the writing's on the wall, but you can't read
So believe in me and the children of the sun

Gemini Syndrome - Children Of The Sun

DA-BOOM-DA-DA-MMH-DUM-NA-EE-MA
DA-BOOM-DA-DA-MMH-DUM-NA-EE-MA
DA-BOOM-DA-DA-MMH-DUM-NA-EE-MA
DA-BOOM-DA-DA-MMH-DUM-NA-EE-MA
DA-BOOM-DA-DA-MMH-DUM-NA-EE-MA
DA-BOOM-DA-DA-MMH-DUM-NA-EE-MA
AY- GO!

Freak on a leaash-korn

I'm on the inside, come get me
I'm on the inside, come get me
I'm on the inside, come get me
Come get me
COME GET ME!!!!

COME GET ME!!!!

Ded - Parasite

Just growling the words come get me sends chills down my spine

Updated

You swear you saw God
Staring through the eyes of a dog
And tell me, is your mind much too far gone?
Was it the sun or the booze?
All those comforts you refused
When your mind
Has led your limbs astray
In the ephemeral haze
Are you still marking time?
And do you wish for a home?
Or were fine on your own?
Your life in a shopping cart
Your mind in a mason jar

Kiltro - Kiltro

There aren't many songs that live rent free in my head, but this is definitely one. It's one of the most starkly beautiful pieces about the homeless I've ever heard.

A thousand leagues, I live and breathe along the ocean floor
Now submerged, I join the cursed to float here ever more

Theory of a Deadman - Drown

I like my chicken rugged handsome
Carcinogen dinner boxed
With the lot
Thanks a lot
No no fuck it
Make it a big booty bucket
So if I chuck it back up
Then I can cup it
And save it for later
Cause I'm growing a cancer
To go with my car
A real fuckin' prancer
God bless the colonel's taken my soul
My body's in tow

https://youtu.be/JGKJGeXpNRU

I tried to be perfect, it just wasn't worth it
Nothing could ever be so wrong
It's hard to believe me, it never gets easy
I guess I knew that all along

Sum 41 - Pieces

This is it, your only one moment in time
Don't be afraid to ever love
Lest the roses hit the stone
This is it, your only one moment in time
Release your grip, don't roll your eyes
Take a breath, life should be touched, not choked to death

Red Sun Rising - Amnesia

There's a zombie on your lawn!
There's a zombie on your lawn!
There's a zombie on your lawn!
We don't want zombies on the lawn!

Zombies On Your Lawn - Laura Shigihara

Have you ever felt lost inside?
So unloved within that you almost died?
Have you ever stepped out of the light
And realized there's a stranger inside?

Shinedown - Stranger Inside

All you'll ever be is a faded memory of a bully
Make another joke while they hang another rope, so lonely
Push 'em to the dirt till the words don't hurt, can you hear me?
And no one's gonna cry on the very day you die, you're a bully

Shinedown - Bully

I've got no hand in matters worldly
I hardly care at all
What's going on fails to concern me
Cause I'm locked behind my wall

Yeah, especially with Jay-Z. Oh yeah, speaking of Jay-Z, these are some lyrics he actually had on Otis.

"Flee in the G450, I might surface
Political refugee, asylum can be purchased
Uh, everything's for sale
I got five passports, I'm never going to jail"

Maybe not the 'best', It's hard to narrow all of my favorite song lyrics down to one favorite, but something that has been sticking with me lately.

Catharsis - Eremocene

Will we breathe our last
In concrete tombs
Or rushing headlong
Into glittering doom

No doves or meadowlarks fly here
And we are truly all alone
As we bury the very earth
Under her own bones
Cutting into the crust
To carve it into mine and thine like light arriving from a dead star
Our dreams stillborn

Are dreams still born?

Above the carnage can you hear
The broken music of the spheres
Orbiting an abyss?

Interred in chasms of the mind
Where hell is somewhere overhead
Get up, shake the dust from your limbs
And make your way across the bones of the dead

Carry on
Over the bones of the dead
Carry on
Over the bones of the dead
Over the bones of the dead
Over the bones of the dead

So you set out
To flee this wretched place
Last witness to a world now laid to waste
Ride on, dark horse
Where there is no road
Burdened by the wreckage you bear within
Abandon everything but hope

Fly
Restless seeker, broken heart
Follow your star far beyond the walls
Of this world we must depart
But if you arrive
You will reach the land you seek
Not as a king, but as a refugee

Like a secret message or a torch that's passed around
Like a tidal wave or a tornado touching down
Like vengeance, like a dream deferred, that festers, then explodes
Every last lost child shall someday find her way back home

And you will fight
Also against yourself
But don't lose heart
Not one step backward on your path
You will arrive
Though you will reach the land you seek
Not as a king, but as a refugee

So write a brand new page, then write again
I know your act is staged, yet you pretend
All while you're turning tables with missing legs
I feel you've overstayed your welcome in
So go the fuck away, don't come again
I'll see your face in the fire, and burn it out

I don't wanna know all your secrets, cause I'll tell
It's hard enough being alone with myself
I don't know how long I'll be holding on
I know you tried your hardest, I know that you meant well
But you pushed me to the edge, and I slipped and I fell
I don't know how long I'll be holding on

Bad Omens - Like A Villain

Discomfort endlessly has pulled itself upon me
Distracting, reacting
Against my will, I stand beside my own reflection
It's haunting, how I can't seem
To find myself again
My walls are closing in
(Without a sense of confidence, I'm convinced that there's just too much pressure to take)
I've felt this way before, so insecure

Linkin Park - Crawling

I can't run with this weight on my back
I can't see cause I'm focused on the past
I can't breathe, I need to break free from the anger that is constantly inside of me

Linkin Park - Fighting Myself

Watsit

Privileged

I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe that your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom isn't fair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires

Savage Garden - Affirmation
For a song released in 1999, it's surprisingly ahead of the curve.
