The Rito people's incestual habits have roots in their tendency to spread out. The average young adult Rito or mated pair will settle down wherever there's room and a way to provide for themselves - frequently not alongside other Rito but on frontiers or near settlements of other races. Fraternalization across species notwithstanding, this can mean that the average adolescent Rito's closest and only sources of socialization are their own family.
The other major factor lies in Rito dwellings being single room houses. One large room functioning as a bedroom, living room, kitchen/dining room, etc, with all other functions being "outside somewhere" or in a separate building. Additionally, and crucially, 'privacy' wasn't a major concern - in a one room household (often without full-height walls) you did practically everything in front of family. Including, say, parents making more children right in front of the children they already have... or a young rito having their sexual awakenings and subsequent exploration of their bodies right in front of their parents, sometimes because of and simultaneous to those parents making more children.
So - without a nearby flock to socialize with, and privacy norms already nonexistent, the question of how to handle the sexual exploration of adolescent Rito became, among many isolated families, answered by "Let's just handle it ourselves". Many adolescent Rito's first partners were their parents, or their elder siblings (under the supervision of their parents). And then with that particular norm firmly broken for purposes of safe sexual education and exploration, why not let it remain broken for the purposes of pleasure. As long as no-one was being hurt or coerced, and steps were being taken to make sure that incest didn't lead into inbreeding... why not?
Thus it was entirely unsurprising for Saki to hear her husband going at it with her son, as she made the walk up to their house. It wasn't the first time, nor would it be the last time.

MemberI'm not the biggest fan of incest but the story made me think it's a really good post because incest would be likely to actually happen with an intelligent species in that sort of situation. Obviously in a real species it would depend on how close the next species (that's at their intelligence level or higher and live in a community which isn't all for incest) and how much exposure they get to that culture.

Though more generally going into the question of the "realism" and various cultures.
1: Parental Incest is generally a universal taboo across multiple cultures in reality, making this particular scenario a lot less likely than for it to be a sibling (though Tulin HAS no siblings). While we're not going too far into realism, the idea that a parent having sex with their child being seen as far less acceptable even when privacy and shame are completely destroyed seems to make sense for this. (One might ask if there is a power dynamic involved in such relationships that render intercourse with one's child seen as wrong in general, especially with the freedom-loving bird people)
2: Small one room houses were fairly common at various points in history, yet we don't see epidemics of incest across various cultures like this (Though if there were, we likely wouldn't know)
3: Though more generally, I think the overall concept makes sense even if I'm not sure of the true 'realism'
