This is my general experience with Deathclaws in Fallout 4.
Me: I ain't no bitch! *stops paying attention for a moment and walks into detection range of a deathclaw*

Deathclaw: *roars loudly before moving to engage*

Me: *screaming "I'm gonna die! I'm gonna die!" while shooting the Deathclaw repeatedly in the legs or belly with a laser rifle*

Deathclaw: *legs get crippled but keeps going until eventually, it gets killed*

Me: Huh, that wasn't so bad.

Yeah, I was disappointed too when I accidentally one-shotted a behemoth with a laser rifle... Oh, well, at least we have mythic legendary deathclaws sometimes...
